For the past 23 years, the Orange County Citizens Foundation has awarded an individual that has contributed significantly to improving the quality of life in Orange County.
The long-awaited 24th annual Ottaway Medal recipient is…Mr. Alan Seidman.
Alan is a Cornwall resident and local businessman who owned and operated several successful businesses before becoming Executive Director of the Construction Contractors Association, the Sheet Metal & Roofing Contractors Association and the Fabricators Erectors & Reinforcing Contractors Association.
Alan was elected to the Orange County Legislature in 1990, is a 25-year member of the Highland Engine Company, and has served on the boards of the Cornwall Little League and the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps of the Highland Engine Company. Having an extensive background in emergency services, he helped to establish a countywide 911 facility and a 911 response system, significantly increasing the safety and well-being of Orange County residents.
Alan has been recognized twice by the Boy Scouts of America Hudson Valley Chapter as a Distinguished Citizen.
In addition to being active in his community, Alan has utilized his expertise in small business ownership and dedicated his time to help foster a strong and resilient economy in Orange County. He was a member of the Cornwall Planning Board for 10 years and is currently serving as a Board Member for Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress. Alan has also served as a Board Member of the Orange County Partnership since 2006 and served as its chair for three years. In addition, he currently serves as the Chairman of the Foreign Trade Zone Board. Recognizing that economic growth can only be realized with a ready workforce, Alan helped develop plans for the expansion of SUNY Orange in Newburgh.
Alan’s commitment to community extends to the armed services as well. He serves on the board of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Inc., and in 2010 and 2016, arranged for General David Petraeus to serve as the keynote speaker for an event that benefited the Purple Heart Hall of Honor. Every three years, Alan coordinates a military appreciation event at Stewart International Guard Base in New Windsor, where 7,000 men and women of the military are recognized and honored for their service. Most recently, Alan coordinated an event that benefitted the families of local marines who died in a plane crash in Mississippi earlier this year. Currently, Alan is overseeing the design and construction of a $10 million expansion of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.
Alan is a member of Temple Beth Jacob in Newburgh. He is a past president of the congregation and served as president of Kol Yisrael, a campus-like center of Jewish life in the region housing several Jewish organizations including two religious institutions, the Jewish Federation, and the Newburgh JCC.
